Our company has established policies for competitive production, featuring high-performance standards and global vision. With these certifications and regulations, we reduce labor risks, and show our clients that we are a company that practices fair work, respects the environment and human rights, as well as local and international labor regulations.
Since August 2016, the CAEI environmental management system works accordingly with all parameters established by the ISO 14001 Norm. The Ingenio Cristóbal Colón, attained this certificate once more in 2018, which proves its proper handling of all elements regarding solid waste, emissions and natural resources.
The company designed an Integrated Quality and Environmental Management System, through which a series of thorough assessments in all quality and environmental aspects are carried out in unison. Likewise, all international standards require for the company to receive an independent certificate for each standard.
Meeting all indicators, alongside implementing the proper control mechanisms and a continuous improvement-based system, has allowed Ingenio Cristóbal Colón to attain the ISO 9001 Standard, now in version 2015, for its third year in a row.
This standard certifies the production and trading of brown sugar, refined sugar and molasses. In 2013, the mill was the first in the Dominican Republic to attain this certification.
All audit procedures were headed by the world-renowned firm SGS.

The Ingenio Cristóbal Colón certified it’s sustainability policy with the ProTerra Foundation, hence confirming that it’s management practices promote sustainable financial performance, incentivizing at the same time the social wellbeing and preservation of the environment.
ProTerra assures that the mill has proven it has the capacity to implement, oversee and monitor it’s sustainable and responsible agricultural production, as per all norms and standards, in all stages of it’s supply chain.
The Ingenio Cristóbal Colón meets all indicators for the Bonsucro certification under standard production and the chain of custody to produce brown and refined sugar, and molasses. This way, the company ensures its sustainability in producing sugar cane from its in-house plantations, as well as the industrial processing of all raw material, as well as the production of all final products.
The attainment of this certification shows that the mill meets all demands by the consumer market, which seeks that for the end product to meet law-abiding principles, respectful to the environment and community, and at the same time financially profitable without causing harm to its surroundings.
The Ingenio Cristóbal Colón is the first agribusiness of the Dominican Republic to receive the OHSAS 18001:2007, on Occupational Health & Safety Management Systems for all sugar cane planting and harvesting processes.
This is a reference standard in labor risk prevention. It certifies that the mill features in-house emergency plans, meets all regulations, defines operational controls and has restructured its management into a safe operation.
Regulation on Security and Health in the workplace
CAEI promotes a culture of prevention, as well as hygiene and safety in the workplace, as the way to meet its “Zero Accident” policy. In this sense, we are one of 40 Dominican companies certified with the Health and Safety in the Workplace Norm, availed and audited by the General Department of Safety and Industrial Hygiene of the Ministry of Labor. We were certified during the early stages of implementation in 2011, and were recertified for 2014-2017, thus meaning that CAEI features all suitable norms to ensure that its workers and collaborators carry on their work at no risk.
In 2013, the Ingenio Cristóbal Colón became the first in the Dominican Republic to attain the ISO 9001-2008 certification, which comprises production, milling, packaging, warehousing and trading of brown and refined sugar and molasses. Thanks to meeting all KPIs, controls and the quality assurance policy based on continuous improvements, the license was renewed in 2016. Audit procedures were under the responsibility of the renowned firm SGS.
In CAEI, we meet all legal requirements respectful of the environment; we manage all our emissions and solid waste suitably, while we effectively and innovatively manage all water usage in the mill. For all this, we attained the ISO14001 Norm, which establishes our environmental management system goes in hand with all local and international regulations.

Recognition from stakeholders
International Recognition for Sustainable Production
As part of the international organization Bonsucro’s recognition to sustainable production, the Ingenio Cristóbal Colón received recognition for attaining the Production Standard Certification by the entity. This recognition was received in London within the Bonsucro Week 2016 Agenda, hosted between November 29th and December 2nd, 2016.
Recognition of the Exceptional Contributions in Continuous Improvements
Bonsucro recognized the outstanding leadership by the Ingenio Cristóbal Colón, for its exemplary work in transforming and modernizing it’s milling practices. The company received the Bonsucro Inspire Award, for it’s exceptional contributions in Continuous Improvements within the Plant and it’s social surroundings. This recognition was received in London, during the celebration of Bonsucro Week 2016, hosted November 29th -December 2nd, 2016.
